How We Teach:

Statement of Purpose

Rozelle Public School, in partnership with students, staff, parents and the wider community will provide an environment conducive to learning and high levels of achievement, in which all students can attain knowledge, skills, values and attitudes enabling them to be self sufficient and self motivated life long learners and happy, successful and effective members of the global community.

Teaching and Learning at Rozelle Public School

Rozelle Public School has built a warm and secure environment by fostering an attitude of caring for everyone in its community. Rozelle is a community minded school (dating from 1877) where the parents and community are welcomed and encouraged to participate in all school activities and decision making. Parents are valued as an integral part of their child’s education.

What will my child learn in primary school?

The Key Learning Areas (KLAs) are:

ENGLISH - including listening, talking, reading and writing. Students are encouraged to develop their spoken and written English skills for a
range of purposes.

MATHEMATICS - students study patterns and relationships. Children analyse, count
and sort numbers and solve problems in the areas of space,
measurement and number.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY - helps students understand their environment, both
man-made and natural, by investigating, designing, making and using
technology.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION - helps students develop self-esteem, social responsibility, personal fitness and the ability to make informed decisions about health and lifestyle.

HUMAN SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT - encourages students to study
relationships between people, cultures and languages, with a special
focus on civics and citizenship.

CREATIVE AND PRACTICAL ARTS - students participate in the art forms of dance,
drama, music and visual arts through creating and making their own
works. An involvement in Musica Viva Program is included in this KLA.

While all the Key Learning Areas are important, teachers spend the greatest time on English and Mathematics.

The Board of Studies appreciates and supports community interest in the curriculum and recognises that parents wish to be informed about what their children will be learning.

The Board of Studies will continue to provide information to parents which will assist their children to learn.

We differentiate the curriculum and extend children in all of the Key Learning Areas and in many other programs such as Count Me In Too (Numeracy), French Language, Debating, Music and Drama, Dance, Photography, ESL (English as a Second Language) and a Science Enrichment Program. The whole school is involved in the production of the school musical. We also offer private music lessons (guitar, recorder and bands), choir and an interschool chess club. We are proud of our fully equipped computer lab, which caters for thirty children, our well resourced library and our on-site Preschool. We cater for children experiencing learning difficulties with a Reading Recovery program and a Learning Difficulties Support Team.

All Rozelle children participate in a gymnastics program run by the YMCA. In recent years our students have participated in District Athletics and Swimming, Touch Football, Cross Country and Netball Competitions organised by the PSSA (Primary School’s Sports Association). Sporting and Gross Motor Programs are arranged for the children each week. As part of the Gold Medal Fitness Program the children also participate in fitness and movement skills three times per week.

At Rozelle School we enthusiastically celebrate many events. Each year we hold an Easter Hat and Book Week Parade and celebrate our diversity and inclusive philosophy through special days such as Harmony Day and NAIDOC Day. We support a number of charities (Stewart House, Genes Research, MS Read-a-thon and the Cancer Council, with the help of our active Student Council. The whole school is involved in the production of the school musical.
